Simple Steps : How To Turn an Old Shirt into a New Mini-Skirt
Dust off that old Ninja Turtle shirt that’s been sitting in the bottom drawer all these years and turn it into a new fashionable mini that will impress everyone. This process can be done with tank tops and t-shirts alike. A sharp pair of scissors is the only tool needed.
- Lay the shirt/tank top out flat. For a t-shirt, cut a small line into the fabric right below the armpit of the shirt. For a tank top, cut at the seams of the straps.
- Make an even cut all the way across the t-shirt (make sure to only cut one layer at a time, it will be easier to keep a straight line that way. Finish out by cutting the other layer of fabric.
- Then ensure that the lines are straight. For tank tops, make sure to cut off the bulky stitches around where the initial cuts were made.
- For tank tops, slide the shirt on as a skirt and tie the straps off at the sides. The funky new skirt is finished. For t-shirts, slide the skirt on. If it fits as is, great; if not a few minor adjustments may be made.
- Adjusting the fit of the skirt. Cut about two or three inches down the seam on one side of the t-shirt and simply tie the ends together to make the skirt snug.
In just a few minutes, those old clothes are turned into great new clothes. If the patterns of the shirts aren’t desired, they can always just be turned inside out and worn that way.

- Lay the shirt out on a flat surface and make a cut about one inch in from where the sleeve stitches are. Do this on both sides.
- Then simply cut a line straight across the front of the shirt, connecting the two initial cuts.
- For the back, either cut it straight across or dip a bit toward the center.
- Then, make sure to even out any rough cuts and try the shirt on. The neckline can be adjusted to suit personal preference.
